Police Warn of Ongoing Scam Targeting Consumers and Garage Door Businesses
A scam active in QLD, NSW, VIC, and NZ—previously affecting locksmiths—is now hitting garage door installation and emergency repair services.
Scammers advertise cheap call-out fees via Google. Unqualified workers (often backpackers) arrive, perform poor or damaging work, then inflate fees and intimidate customers into paying.
They often steal the names of legitimate businesses to appear credible and pay to appear in top Google search results.
• Be cautious of businesses in the top 10 Google search results for garage door call-outs.
• Verify details at the Australian Business Register using the ABN, ACN, or business name.
• Not registered for GST
• Business registered for less than 6 months
• Associated names include locksmith, aircon clean, or garage door services registered recently
